Dear William,

Welcome to Enertech Labs Newsletter Number 2.

This month we are covering information on fuel pricing, US petroleum pipelines, backup and standby power generation, and the myth of magnets and fuels.

As you read through this newsletter you can finish reading each article by clicking on the link at the bottom of that article.

Supertanker v2
The Price of Fuel

Some current information and little bit of speculation about fuel cost and availability for the balance of 2006.

As of early April 2006, the average price of #2 diesel is in the $2.58 per gallon range, with gasoline prices continuing to rise, now exceeding the cost of diesel in many areas.

There is currently what is called a “seasonal reduction” in the availability of Low-Sulfur Diesel.

This reduction in supply is likely to be exacerbated by the continuing tight supplies of crude. This reduction of about 400,000 barrels per day available to the markets will further tighten the supply and provide continued upward pressure on prices.

The world is currently using approximately 85 million bpd or 3,570,000,000 gallons; yes that’s three and one half billion gallons per day. If you convert this into ships at 93,900,000 gallons per Ultra Large Crude Carrier (ULCC) supertanker, this means the world uses 38+ of these supertankers per day...

...Knowledgeable sources believe that gasoline will soon exceed $3.00 per gallon in most if not all of the US. This is in part a normal increase for the summer driving season and in part from tight crude supplies.

Many within the industry expect the price of #2 diesel to rise $.30 - $.35+ as the new Ultra-Low Sulfur requirements take effect June 1st.

Pipeline Map 1v2
Colonial Pipeline has announced a system origin specification of maximum 8 parts per million for shipment of ultra low sulfur diesel.

This announcement followed the approval by Colonial's Board of Directors of extensive pipeline and system modifications necessary to limit the increases in sulfur content during pipeline transportation of the product. Colonial will begin transporting ULSD by June 2006.

Ultra low sulfur diesel was mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for use in on-road diesel engines (light and heavy duty) beginning with the model year 2007. This requirement is a part of the ongoing effort to reduce pollution and improve the air quality across the country. The EPA has established a 15 ppm limit, with a testing tolerance of 2 ppm, for ultra-low sulfur diesel at the retail market.

Pipelines such as Colonial, which are large, fungible systems and also carry such high-sulfur products as home heating oil and jet fuel, face significant challenges in ULSD delivery.

Reaching this decision for the 8 ppm origin specification...

Cummins- Gen-Set 1
Backup and Standby Electrical Generators - Equipment designed to provide emergency electrical power to buildings and equipment in the event of temporary loss of primary power.

Emergency Backup Fire Pumps – Equipment designed to provide temporary water pressure to fire protection systems in the event of loss of electrical power primary system pumps.

Emergency Backup systems by are definition designed to operate during the failure of primary systems.

Equipment chosen for this purpose must have the capability of quickly starting and then operating at or near full capacity for extended periods of time.

Because this equipment sits idle for extended periods of time it often requires extra components and specialized maintenance to be able to fulfill its emergency functions with 100% reliability.

When diesel engines sit for extended periods of time they suffer from forms or deterioration that are not normally seen in engines used on a regular basis.

Some important considerations are: Corrosion both internal and external is much more of an issue. The additive package in antifreeze deteriorates and breaks down to a point where the fluid no longer protects the engine and cooling system. Acids within the cooling system will then destroy radiators, thermostats, water pumps, cylinder liners, etc.

Often engines, generators, and pumps that are otherwise very well maintained suffer failures due to the condition of the fuel. An engine that runs on deteriorated fuel can be hard to start, poor running, create excess emissions, and can suffer catastrophic failure when required to operate under full load. ...

Magnetic Fuel Device v2
Magnetic devices and treatments have claimed to improve the combustibility of fuels.

These products have been around since at least the 1920's and seem to pop back up every 10 or 15 years. A review of the available literature reveals that these claims made by the purveyors of these products are not well supported by available data. Most magnetic fuel treatment systems appear to be marketed through independent distributors who often sell out of their homes. An Internet search using the keywords magnetic treatment reveals dozens of independent distributor home pages. Very few such devices are offered by national chain stores. Most are sold by direct independent sales people or are advertised in mail- order catalogs or sold via the Internet. Possibly, the magnetic-device manufacturers sell through independent distributors to insulate themselves from some of the more exotic claimed benefits of magnetic treatment, or perhaps consumer and wholesaler skepticism has kept magnetic treatment out of mainstream retail. Regardless of the reasons, magnetic fuel treatment devices are not usually available at the local automobile parts or heavy duty parts supply store. This lack of wide availability has given magnetic fuel treatment a sort of fringe- science status in the minds of many consumers.

Claimed Benefits and Effects Magnetic fuel treatment devices are constructed of one or more magnets that are clamped around or installed inside an automobile's engine fuel line between the gas tank and the carburetor (or fuel injectors). Claims for these devices include decreased hazardous gas emissions, more complete combustion, improved engine power, longer-lasting engine components, and a 10 percent to 20 percent increase in gas mileage. Prices for automotive fuel treatment magnets range from about $50 to $300 with truck and other units for stationary engines ranging from $300 to $1500 The distributors of these devices rarely can cite any documented test results that validate these claims. Instead, they rely on numerous testimonials, lists of corporations and municipalities that purportedly use the devices, and scientific-sounding explanations of magnetic fuel treatment. However, just because distributors do not cite the literature does not mean that no relevant literature exists. Published test reports and journal articles that investigate magnetic treatment are available. This article reviews the available experimental evidence...
