Ethanol in Gasoline - Ethanol Problems - Ethanol
as a
Replacement for MTBE
Ethanol is the Future, Ethanol is Coming, Ethanol is
Here; there is a new headline about Ethanol nearly
every day now.
Ethanol production is a well understood technology
with the potential improve dramatically in efficiency
that may in the future offer a partial solution to US
energy needs. It is not the be all, end all, but it can
help.
Beyond the current hype, Ethanol plays a small but
important role in today?s fuels marketplace. In the
future this role will likely become much more
significant and even vital to our energy program.
Ethanol is best known as ?grain alcohol? or in
some places as ?moonshine?. It is produced by taking
a grain, such as corn, crushing it and mixing with
water and yeasts to form a mash. This mash is
allowed to
ferment for a few days. The wort (fermented mash)
is then boiled in a still and with the help of the
cooling tower it distills the vapors into a pure alcohol.
Ethanol can be blended with petroleum gasoline from
0.1%-99.9% to 1%.
Most commonly blends of 10% to 15% are available
in the US. However blends up to 85% (E85) are
possible for vehicles designed and manufactured to
run on this fuel. These Flex-Fuel vehicles have had
changes made to fuel system and engine...

Oil Sludges in Gasoline Engines
|
 |
We have seen a recent spate of problems with oil
system sludges plugging oil passages and pumps in
certain vehicles.
The engines of today place a huge load on motor
oils. Higher revving engines, high heat, reduced oil
capacity in some engines, and the higher loads
placed on the additive packages used in motor oils.
The gasoline sold today has lower amounts of
detergent-dispersants than at any time in the last
ten years. There are also more contaminants
including sulfur in these fuels.
As these fuels are burned they produce more by-
products which the oil must breakdown and hold in
suspension until the next oil change.
There is quite a bit of truth to the old adage
about
motor oil never really wearing out. Motor oil itself can
be used for a very long time, the problem is that the
detergent-dispersant, anti-corrosive, extreme
pressure lubricating package, and other additive
components get used up. As these components get
used up the oil can no longer hold all of the
contaminants in suspension and they begin to
deposit themselves throughout the engine.
These contaminants tend to build up in the small
passages and places where the oil naturally pools. As
this process goes forward it restricts oil flows and
inhibits proper lubrication. It can quickly lead to
catastrophic...

Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel - It's Here
|
 |
For those of you who have waited, the day has
finally arrived. Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) is here.
In an attempt to clear up some of the
misconceptions and misinformation on the EPA and
ASTM requirements for ULSD I will try to set the
record straight.
You will first notice that this is very clear fuel, with
possibly a very light amber or green tint to it. When
fresh it has very little if any odor. It may also feel a
little thinner and less oily to the touch.
The EPA requires that as of June 1, 2006, 80% of
diesel fuel refined and sold for on-highway use be
delivered to the distribution network at 15 parts per
million (ppm) or less of sulfur.
As of October 1, 2006 80% of all fuel delivered for on-
highway use must be 15ppm or less of sulfur.
The 80% requirement is designed to accommodate
some older refineries that would otherwise be forced
off-line and to offer a marketing channel for LSD. It
will be problematic for to try and order this product
for use on regular basis due to storage tank
constraints.
Refiners and Distributors are under no obligation to
notify you...
