Dear William,
Combustion Chamber

Above image is an actual photo of diesel engine fuel combustion.

Welcome to Enertech Labs Newsletter Number 9.
This month we will discuss changes in gasoline's and the problems associated with those changes, the truth about Winter Blended Diesel Fuels, and Fluid Maintenance in vehicles and equipment.

As you read through this newsletter you can finish reading each article by clicking on the link at the bottom of that article.

Catalytic Converter Auto
Due to the large number of recent changes to fuel, numerous problems with gasoline powered vehicles have developed. These problems are not always immediately identified as fuel problems, and therefore technicians are spending a lot of time and money on symptoms, rather than root causes. Most technicians will tell you that they have seen a dramatic increase in the number of complaints of performance, poor fuel economy, or Check Engine light illumination due to the failure of the exhaust related emissions items (EGR, Oxygen Sensors, Catalytic Converters, etc.) in the last 2 years. Ask them the root cause and you will hear many theories.

In order to properly understand what is happening a little history review is helpful. In the late 1980?s emissions standards had become more stringent making fuel injection a necessity. These vehicles burned cleaner and ran better than Carburetor equipped vehicles ever could. Drive-ability concerns ...

Fuel Tank Farm
#2 Diesel Fuel contains a significant amount of paraffin wax. On the positive side this wax contains a lot of energy (Btu?s) and adds viscosity and lubricity to diesel fuels. The downside of paraffin wax is that it causes cold weather problems for users. As the fuel gets colder the wax crystals grow in size until they become visible (cloud point (CP)), next they begin to interfere with each other and inhibit the movement of the fuel (cold filter plug point (CFPP)), and finally they grow together turning into a semi- solid (pour point (PP)).

#1 Diesel, Kerosene, and Jet Fuel are lighter versions of regular diesel, having a different boiling point and much less paraffin wax. There is a lot of misunderstanding about Winter Blended Diesel Fuel, what it is, and what it can do. You can improve the cold weather characteristics of diesel fuel ...

Engine Oil Sludge 3
Fluid and fluid maintenance are one of the most important areas of vehicle and equipment maintenance.
The need for engine oil service is fairly well known and recognized. Oil additives that help oil perform and protect, tend to break down or get used up over time and no longer perform their functions. Additives include detergents to keep engines clean and friction modifiers to prevent wear. Oil also becomes contaminated with by products of combustion which pass by piston rings and moisture from the air which mixes with oil to form various acids.

All these can lead to wear and sludge. Oil flush and oil additives can remove sludge, and extend oil life. Dirty oil can easily be observed and shown to a customer.
Transmission Fluid has four main functions ...

Sultzer Diesel Engine
The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two- stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today.
It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines. These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships. Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them.
The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98". Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower.
Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version.

Some facts on the 14 cylinder version: Total engine weight: 2300 tons (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.) Length: 89 feet Height: 44 feet Maximum power: 108,920 hp at 102 rpm Maximum torque: 5,608,312 lb/ft at 102 rpm
Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption). Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/hp/hour. At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency. That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion.
For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the 0.40-0.60 lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range.
Even at its most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour.
